The Poetry Institute of Africa runs free poetry competitions every year and awards thousands of rands in cash prizes to winning entries. Our two separate Open Contests closing dates are 31st May, and the second contest closes 30th November. No specific subject matter and/or style is requested for our 'Student' Contests and for our 'Open' Contest. Poems deemed acceptable by the selection committee are featured in an anthology that follows each contest, after permission has been granted by the poets. Winners are chosen in January and October. The anthologies are published from May to July and August to November of the following year. Our 'Student Contests' are for children aged 13 years and under and 14 to 18 years old. The contests close 30th April each year. In addition to our existing prizes in our 'Student' Contest, we will now award a computer as a prize, to the school that has the highest percentage of student poems, accepted by our selection committee. We will also donate complimentary copies of the anthology to all schools whose students have won a prize in the competition! The anthologies which follow these contests are published between March and April of the following year. Winners names in both cases are published in the anthology. Complete lists of all our winners are available from the Institute and are also on our website. We do not do critiques on poems and request that only one poem per poet per contest is enclosed of 24 lines or less. We cannot be asked to choose from a selection of poems as we receive thousands of entries for each contest. Return of manuscripts also cannot be guaranteed. All competitions are free and no subsidy or fee is required to ensure inclusion of your poem in the contest or anthology that follows.
